Shift Motor Oil

Hi, I'm replacing the axle seal just to the right of the shift motor box on my front axle ('90 Wrangler 2.5L). How much oil should there be in the shifter box? I assume there should be some, or there wouldn't be a need for a thick cork gasket between the shift motor plate and the box.

Thanks and Happy New Year!
