Tach Hookup w/HEI?

I was running this tach with my TFI ignition. The green ignition wire ran to the red wire of the tach and then the red wire out of the tach connected to the other end of the cut green wire . Basically the tach runs through the ignition.
This does not work with the HEI and I seem to have heard that I will use the red ign wire (makes sense) but don't know if it runs through the ignition or is bridged off the ignition.
Help?

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

Thinking off the top of my head, that seems to be wired as a series tach, just wired in series on the (-) side of the coil. But it would not suprise me that the two green wires just feed directly through the tach and a signal is picked off the wire as in a conventional tach. There seems to be one to many wires wich leads me to believe that this is true.

Orange and black are the lights but what does the purple wire connect to.

Did you wire this up yourself??

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

I was doing it from memory and I may have confused myself. The pink wire does not exist (only in my mind). The light hookup is as you stated and works fine. I have revised the drawing.

I'm just not sure how I need to hook this tach up properly for the HEI?

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

I'm confused... the GM HEI has a tach signal point built it.

Am I missing something?

John's correct, the FOMOCO style in-line tach won't work with a GM style HEI.

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

I have the Stealth HEI (GM HEI module mounted in the Duraspark ign module case) with the Ford distributor.

Is there any way to make this tach work with my setup?

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

Nope... not with that module. It's the module that defines if the tach will work with it, or not.

Is an AMC in-line style tach different than a FoMoCo in-line style in-line tach? I know the AMC in-line tach works with the HEI including the "Stealth HEI" setup.

IF it was mine, I would try running it in-line with the power wire feeding the module and coil just like the CJ tach works. I would give it an 90% success rate on it working this way. but it's your tach and I would not want you to ruin the tach.

Did you wire this tach yourself or did the PO do it. Does it look cobbled together?

Re: Tach Hookup w/HEI?

I wired it myself. Someone recommended the wiring method I ended up using and it worked fine so I never questioned whether it was right or not.
It's a factory AMC Jeep tach. Not sure if it works the same way a FoMoCo in-line tach works.
IF I were to try to hook it up, I would run it in-line off of the RED ignition wire, correct?
