New Axle Arrived

My HP Dana 44 came in today, took a month to get built but looks good!

I have everything loose from my old axle except the steering link at the pitman arm, I can't get it off. Is there a trick I can use? I don't want to torch it but it is ticking me off!!

I spent an hour getting everything else loose and another hour cursing trying to get that steering link loose in 18F weather!

Re: New Axle Arrived

Keep at it...Lot's of PB Blaster, A wee bit of heat, big freakin' hammer (I know, it don't fit up in there very well).

So, tell us all about your new axle...what did you get built on/in it, who did it for you?

Re: New Axle Arrived

I just don't understand the fixation with PB Blaster, while it is better than WD40 it doesn't seem to penetrate (for me anyway).

Go to Auto Zone and buy a couple of cans of Rust Eater. It actually is a penetrating oil. It smells nasty also but doesn't dry up before doing something.

Maybe it's just me... crazy old man... what do I know...

You can also get a cheapie tie-rod end puller and/or a pitman arm puller while you are there.

Here's an old post by Greg, be sure to read what Caver Dave had to say.

As has been said, lube it up good, run the screw down tight, whack with BFH, repeat a few times and WALK AWAY! Repeat over as many nights/days as it takes.

Steering Gear replacement...quick question

Yep it was just a "quick question"

Re: New Axle Arrived

Here is the axle specs.

Built by Drive Train Specialists

Housing: Ford HP Dana 44
Cutdown to 2" wider than stock TJ width
4.89 gears
Detroit Locker
30 spline Moser Alloy shafts inner and outer
Mile Marker Hubs (they don't use Warn)
Ford Brakes, etc
CTM ujoints
TJ bracketry but muck beefier than stock
Complete Assembly
I know its only a Dana 44 but it still dwarfs my Dana 30!

Re: New Axle Arrived

At work now but I will try and post a picture tonight, I always have a problem posting pictures.

I went with 4.89's because I run 37's and very, very, very seldom run it on the highway so I like the 4.89's better than the 4.56's. When I read the break-in info on the new axle it says to run for 30 miles between 45mph and 60mph then allow to cool completely. Then repeat 2 more times. I have not had my jeep up to 45mph since the May Badlands bash!

Was that on the Orange or Pink trail?

Now get that thing together and broken in. I'll get my guts back together. Then we can trail test both.
Oh yeah, and congrats on the sweet axle.

Re: New Axle Arrived

Jim,

I hope to have this thing back together by the end of the weekend. That is if the wife doesn't shoot me for working on the holidays. I didn't get home until 7PM tonight so didn't have time to work on it.

Hope it hits the 40's like the weatherman says it is! It would be nice to have all the snow melt.

Get better and we will see what else I need to upgrade on my Jeep! Sorry to hear about your intestines.
