Alternator mounting

I think I might have the wrong brackets to mount my alternator to my 360. Anyone have a pic that shows the brackets and how they are mounted to the engine?

Re: Alternator mounting

Hmm I think the answer to your question is under the drivers seat in my Scrambler (hope I can remember how it goes together).

There are likely several different alternator mountings for AMC V8's, but it seems to me that there are two basic setups. And I have both. If you can wait a day or two I'll take some pictures. The older version I have an extra set of brackets that can be all yours for the shipping.

Should I forget and no one else posts up... pop this back to the top and I'll see it.

Re: Alternator mounting

Click on any picture for a thumbnail page (all the same link). Click on the pictures from the thumbnail page and get much larger pictures.

Here's a 360 from a late 80s Waggy.

Here's one I picked up at a salvage yard from a 197X CJ-7 w/304. Intend to use that on Rabid_Tortoise if we can work out the puzzle.

Here's one that I got somewhere and could not find a way to make it work. Seems like the water pump mounts differently.

If anyone wants the last one above just pay shipping.

Re: Alternator mounting

What's probably throwing this guy off is AMC mounted the Delco SI alternator 'UpSideDown' compared to what most people are used to seeing...
Adjuster is on the bottom instead of the top like on GM vehicles.

The bottom one is for a Prestolite alternator for a V-8.
I'll take it if no one else wants it.
Where do I send the shipping money to?

To use the Prestolite bracket with a GM alternator, you will have to cut part of the front housing foot away, grind away some of the front housing ribs to keep the belt running straight, and fabricate a bracket support that clears the alternator housing, lower heater hose and still supports the alternator/ primary bracket from belt torque force.
(Harder to say than to do!)
The problem is, Prestolite sold out to Motorola, and that was replaced with a Ford unit, but I put a GM Delco alternator in it! How's that for Jeep Screwy!

Re: Alternator mounting

Thanks, I think I got it now. The upside down is what screwed me up.

Just on the V8s, it's mounted right side up on I6s. Maybe not all.

Long as 86CJ7 doesn't want it, I offered it to him first I guess. But I might have another, have to look.

Ahh yes that was the kicker. Not only was there a problem with the newer (aftermarket) water pump the darn alternator didn't fit without hacking the bracket up some.

At the time I thought that's for a different (older) alternator and the booty fab had worked so far (still is). So that all works in my head now as to why I thought there were two basic versions.

I got rid of the vibration by beefing up the booty fab with yet more booty fab and it's still running that way. Now to use the brackets that have lived under Grumpy's drivers seat for six months.

So has any of this helped?

Re: Alternator mounting

Got it. Thanks for the photos.

I do not need the brackets, let the other guy have them.
