304 and 360 heads

Well, one of my 304 heads has a crack in it. Does anyone know the combustion chamber sizes of the 304 and 360 heads?

Re: 304 and 360 heads

The 360 heads are different. They will bolt on but are made for the bigger bore of the 360 and have bigger valves that may hit the cylinder walls depending on cam.

Re: 304 and 360 heads

My 304 is bored 0.060" over. There shouldn't be a problem with the valves hitting the cylinder.

I'd gladly accept a head too if anyone has one laying around that needs the room.

Re: 304 and 360 heads

304 heads will bolt on a 360 with no modification.

360 heads WILL NOT fit a 304 without clearancing the top of the cylinder for valve relief.

There are no differances in 304 heads that I'm aware of...

There are two different types of 360 heads, often refered to as "2 Barrel" and "4 Barrel".
The "4 Barrel" heads have larger runners to accomidate larger intake manifold runners.

Don't play mix and match, keep both either 304 or 360, and if you choose 360 heads, make sure they both have the same part numbers.
Any AMC product with 304 can donate heads to your project, and there are lots of them in older junk yards...
Guys are willing to sell them cheap just to make anything on the older AMC stuff...

Ahhh if you know of salvage yards that still have old AMC stuff... share the wealth. Very hard to find anything more than a few years old, they don't even know what you are asking for if you say "AMC".

For complete information on 360 heads or anything AMC V8 go here.

Most of the time when I tell people I have an AMC 360 they think I said chrysler or ford.

Re: 304 and 360 heads

There are a row of old cars and trucks in every farmers back lot around here, and I can't think of a one that doesn't have at least 1 AMC product in it.
I stopped to take a wizz a couple of days ago, and wound up buying a nearly perfect tail gate for my truck. Heck of a deal for $10, and it's almost the right color.
I stopped to collect some paw-paw tree seeds about a month ago and bought a dash and grill shell for a CJ from a farmers field, for $25 no less! Headlight buckets and rings already gone, but you can't have everything...

Re: 304 and 360 heads

Will......did you find a cylinder head? If not I think I have one here for you. I have to check and see for certain if it is a 304, but I'm 90% sure that it is. I have the block too and it's all apart so I can measure the bore. If you can use one of these heads, I can crate and ship it to you. Cost would be shipping only. You can PM me at the same e-mail as before. Dave

Re: 304 and 360 heads

Thanks for the offer Dave. I am going to go with the 360 heads first and see how it does. Since it is now a 314, it might work fine. I found out the 360 is only 1 cc smaller combustion chamber than the 304.
