Superior Axle Kit

Im putting superior one piece axle kit on my 83 cj7. Ive got the stock amc 20 on the jeep. The insturctions for the kit say to check for a powerlock differential. What does that mean?

Re: Superior Axle Kit

They mean a limited slip differential. The only sure way to check is to remove the cover and look in. If 4 spider gears are visible it's an open diff. The limited slip has what looks like a drum that hides the spiders.

There should also be a tag hanging on one of the cover bolts, but it may be missing, and I don't know what code it will have to designate LS.

You need to know that any time you change the gear lube. A limited slip diff needs a friction modifier added to the gear lube. Without it the clutches will slip and quickly wear out. If they're already worn out it doesn't matter.
