OT Another way to support the military
We know an artillery captain in Baghdad who has 90 men in his battery. I created a joint bank account here in our names, and had the bank send him a debit Master Card. We put money in the account and he uses the debit card to buy things for his men at the PX. Cash is the universal gift certificate. He said that theirs is a small PX but most of the every day items are in stock, and some special items can be ordered for him.
Then we send stuff to him that isn't available at the PX. We just sent off a dozen 3-pound bags of peanut butter filled pretzel nuggets and 2 dozen tubes of Camphor Ice skin balm.
IMO it's a pretty good way to do things because he can get routine items immediately, and we don't have to pay to ship them. No sense in giving donation funds to the post office.
Due to anti-terrorist regulations he had to scan his military ID and e-mail it to them, so they would have it on file. That was the only difficulty.
