OT- Electrical Graemlins in an ATV
I have an 01 Bombardier Traxter XT ATV. Its been a great machine up until now, but I'm having an electrical problem. Normally, when I switch the ign. key on, the dash lights 'light up' and I can start the engine. A few weeks ago, with no warning, the lights would no longer come on, and the engine won't start. The backlight for the speedometer flashes briefly, and the solenoid for the winch clicks, but nothing else does. I suspected the starter solenoid , so I replaced it with a generic one. I tested the old one as well, at it seems to work off the ATV under testing.(The reason I suspected the S.S. was due to some corrosion- the battery was leaking acid sometime back-I've cleaned all the affected connections I can find). I know the ign. switch is on the negative side, and then goes to the computer. If I switch the ign. key real fast on and off, all the lights on the dash come on momentarily and then flash off. If I am real fast, I can hit the start switch and turn the engine on, but not long enough to keep it running. My dad was able to keep it running for 7-8 minutes doing this though.
I'm trying to figure out-
1. what the problem is.
2. Why the lights will light momentarily when I switch the ign. key fast.
I have a complete FSM on CD- with schematics- if anyone is able to help. I try to work on my own equipment when possible, but it looks like I may have to load it up and take it to a dealer- closest capable one is at least 1.5 hrs away.
I'm have my suspicions about what it is, but I'd like some input first.
Thanks a bunch!
