oil leak/burn

Hi there

At what point do you become concerned about the amount of oil leaking/burning?

Like, a quart for every
3000 miles?
1000 miles?
every month?
each 1 hour trip?
every block?

This is a CJ if that makes a difference...

Thanks
Patrick

Re: oil leak/burn

when you have a fire,,,cant afford the oil, or the wife complains about the driveway stains....
Heck, some new cars will burn a quart in 1500 miles and the factory says that is OK.

"Concern" about oil burning/leaking/loss in a CJ?

Given the commonality of this occurence, I'd be more concerned if it didn't burn/leak/use oil.

BTW, above is not limited to CJ's... common in ALL Jeeps that I've ever owned.

Leaks: Depends on the ratio of puddle size to difficulty of repair.

Burning: Pretty much the same as for leaks, except you want to pay attention if the rate changes noticibly.

Re: oil leak/burn

Is the problem a leak, or burning of oil. Leaks are something you can fix, and usually it's not that hard or expensive... a little sealant - a gasket - thinking - and time and it's gone!

On the other hand, I don't like oil burning... that's indicative of engine problems... so that gets my attention! If that engine's burning a quart and a half between oil changes (I do a LOF every 2,000 miles) I get paranoid...
