Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

i have this on my toyota, and my CJ used to do the same thing....

doesnt happen when its warm out, only when its cold/cool
makes a crackling/rattling..........sounds just likr someone shaking a can of spray paint, reallllllllly fast

only under load, when the air is cold, and the engine is cold
goes away in warm weather, goes away when the engine warms up, idles and revs fine in neutral

any ideas? no trouble codes

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

Does the noise increase/decrease with engine speed?

Is the engine RPM equal to or less than the noise?

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

Sounds a lot like 'pinging' (pre-ignition).
If this is on your 97 with FI, then you could have a bad knock sensor.

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

Sometimes a cat or muffler will make some pretty strange sounds when warming up or cooling off.

Just a thought.

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

sound like its comng from the engine compartment....i'll check where the cat is located, might be that *shrug*

as for RPMs it does seem related to RPM, disappears as i rev higher though,

so, Cold Engine, Cold Air, under load, lower RPMs, disappears higher up

any other idea that can be readily checked out.....?

thanks!

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

Look at the pulleys, the belts, alternator and water pump.

Re: Rattling/Crackling kinda noise

Check your flywheel or flexplate. It could have a crack in it. Although its probably one of the things that Leve suggests, when I had a crack in my flexplate it made a similar noise to what your describing.
