Re: In reverse and first gear jeep shakes violentl

Jim,
I agree that the flywheel/clutch disk/pressure plate are potential causes/solutions. However my symptoms (identical to those described in the post, 'cept mine was all the time not just when warm) were entirely caused by mm's. Replaced those and I was good to go. A lot easier/cheaper to check/replace those if necessary than pulling out the tranny.

Agreed. All the other suggestions are easier and cheaper than taking the clutch out again. If they fix the problem, great. And they all NEED to be fixed anyway. Even if a clutch is chatter-prone, it still can last many thousands of miles.

Thanks Jim I'm gonna have to check that out because to be honest my valve cover leak and this chatter kind of started around the same time. (this 88 only has 58000 original miles too ) It just got a clutch but I dont know if they did it right or not cause the guy I got it from had it done. He showed me the bill hehe. I'll let you know when I figure it out though. Thanks for the insight.

I had to add also that the stainless steel cj7 rebuild...fantastic. John Delorean is kicking himself right now for not thinking of that beautiful work and helpful links thanks again.

With clutch chatter in mind I went out and drove it before until it got warmed up and it kind of does sound and feel like that too. but then the darned thing makes so many noises that its hard to nail it down lol

Wasn't it great when the Fed's got John into a really big jam and he actually suggested during an interview that if "EVERYONE" would just send him a dollar. That was about the time his main squeeze squished out on her own (only to get involved with some TV producer).

Life is cruel for some and surely for John Delorean, it was a very innovative car, never got the credit it deserved.

Back to the Future.... I still have an OUTATIME plate on the front of my work truck.

OK, I remember too much about that in vague detail.

Edit: I thought about what I just wrote.... and it does nothing to help the original poster or the problem he is having...

Sorry for the diversion.

Let's get this back on track.
