tire carriers

does anyone have any experience with the bestop tire carrier? does it work well? any problems with corrosion? would i be better off with a bumper mounted carrier?

thanks for any input!

Re: tire carriers

The main thing that I do not like about the Bestop carrier, is that you have to drill into the body to mount it. More holes = more rust. And for the price of a premade carrier you could pick up a used arc welder and make one yourself. Then you get a carrier that is exactly what you want, the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and you learned a new skill. If you really want to buy a carrier somebody on this board could probably build you one for a reasonable price. Good luck!

I have come to the same conclusion. I was looking at nerf bars and brush guards, but decided I could save myself alot of moneyby welding them together myself

For a well-made carrier at a good price check with Rio Grande on the board.

I generally recommend spending money on tools and building stuff the way you want it. Only reason not to is if you're an apartment dweller with no place to work or store tools.

yeah if i am going to go with a bumper mounted carrier i have the ability and materials to make one myself. i am actually working on a stainless bumper/2"reciever right now i just am having troubles figuring out the hinge and latch.
i would like to keep it all stainless so a hinge is hard to come by. and i want a latching mechanism that will not let it rattle. any idea where i can find parts?

Re: tire carriers

Not that tough to make a hinge and latch. Probably faster than trying to find what you want in stainless.

This is a pretty nice carrier.

I just typed in "jeep tire carrier diy" on yahoo and came up with a few hits.
Lots of people have made carriers. Do a search here and on google/yahoo and you should find lots of info.

Good luck
Pete
