Re: crazy gas shortage?

Those 2 refineries idle in Michigan must not have connections to the white house.

Re: crazy gas shortage?

No new refineries have been built in the US since 1976.
But fuel use has certainly increased many times over.
You can thank the greenies for that!

They've wanted this for a long time - now you have it!

How can you blame Bush for that?

Fortunatly we have reserves the govt stores - but interestingly only 2 oil companies, as of yesterday, have actually submitted applications to "borrow" some. And yesterday BOTH of them CANCELLED the applications. They both said they've found "other sources." Some other oil companies are talking about doing it, but as of yesterday NONE have applied!
Does that tell you something? Crude is still available, no real shortage, just inconvenience for a few weeks.

Out of the 500 or so platforms out at sea, 20 were lost - floated away, sank, or damaged beyond repair = 4%. That leaves the rest operable soon. Estimates are a few days to a few weeks, depending.

It's the refinery capacities that have caused the fuel shortage - or lack of it now. Before the storm they were having trouble keeping up - the laws putting in, then taking out MTBE have caused problems too - they all had to be extensively modified TWICE! Modified == Downtime.

Several refineries, I think 20, were damaged in the hurricane. Almost all of them predict they'll be back on-line within 2 weeks! Look at the news reports on Valero - the largest refiners. They had 2 hit.

The docks where oil is off and on loaded have been damaged. But they are putting up temporary facilities - they predict 2 to 3 weeks to be operational.

Elsewhere -- The stations charging $5.00 or more - price gouging. The public will remember after it's over. The wholesale cost to the stations has gone up a little, but not near that much!

The British are making a big deal over all this, saying it's our fault - yes some, but --.
The picture of the $5 sign splashed all over - BP - what does BP mean? Think!
BRITISH PERTROLEUM! Need I say more?

One of the problems when the price goes up - the seller has to instantly raise his price - otherwise they can't afford to buy the next load at the higher price. If he's already sold most of what he has in stock at a price lower than what it will cost him for more, then sometimes they have to make a loan just to get another load! After a bank loans him money several times -- guess what!?

That alone has caused some stations to go dry!

I'm no lover of Bush, mainly because of his stand on open borders, not protecting America's interest in international trading etc. and not knowing what "illegal alien" means.

But be realistic - what you hear in the media and on CNN - (Communist News Network) is lies and distortions!!!

Try a different news source - search the investors news sources, where the facts are revealed.

This may actually result as a good thing.
Building materials, cement, roofing, air conditioners, automobiles, furniture - all kinds of things need to be purchased as replacements. That liberates lots of insurance money into the economy. Businesses all over the country will do business like never before. Jobs will be created all over the country.

Look at the rioting and looting - figure why that's happening. Look at who is doing it.

And -- remember all the times other countries had disasters? We always ran to help - rescue teams, search teams, money, food, equipment, supplies etc.
Where are these same countries now?

Where is the UN -- that we support!

This can, and should be a big wake-up call! If folks still don't understand and don't do something about it -- they deserve what they get!

What do you think this country would be like with Gore, Kerry, Lieberman - or ---- Kennedy in charge? You betcha!

Re: crazy gas shortage?

Many comments about Pres. Bush and VP Cheney being 'oil men'...

But, how many US Congressmen hold oil stock...? On BOTH sides of the aisle!

It is not just the current Administration's doing... plenty of 'credit' to go around.

BTW... do Congressmen buy their own gas? (I very much doubt it...)

Re: crazy gas shortage?

It now costs $90 to fill up my Suburban. $45 to fill up the BMW, and $60 to fill the Jeep (all assuming that the tanks are dry). Insane. I went and played poker at the local casino today and bought into the 2-4 game for $100. It seemed like a lot until I realized that it was just a tank of gas....

Re: crazy gas shortage?

As of midnight tonight Georgia's tax on gas will be placed on a moratorium. (sp) Gov. Perdue called a special session to push it through today. I am anxious to see if this will really cause prices to go back down like it's supposed to. I'm with the BS crowd. No way gas should have been fluctuating like it was before the hurricane and certainly not after. Went from 2.55 to 3.19 in less than 2 days. Yesterday the store I get mine from "ran out" and it was about 2.89 at the time. Didn't know when they were gonna get more. Woke up this morning and suddenly all pumps were open and it was 3.19. Politicians, business owners, and whoever else is to blame can all kiss my ass. I think it's a sin, and nevermind those countries who aren't helping us, we should be able to stand on our own 2 feet and get through this, that's what true "powers" do.

Re: crazy gas shortage?

i heard something on why the suspending of taxes might be a bad idea....but i cant rember what the logic behind it was....i'll have to dig for that, something having to do with the economy and our usage of fuel....but they didnt sound optomistic

maybe someone who understands economics gets it better

I'm w/ Dave... 1973 charade all over again... Lasted just long enough for majority of folks to sell-off their 'old' high fuel-consumption vehicles, then the availability/prices suddenly got better/stabilized.

In addition to the POS politicians and oil execs, I think we can thank all the many yuppies and their 'ne'er-to-leave-the-pavement' SUVs. What better method to pry folks out of their (already-owned) under-utilized gas hogs and into new (meaning "need to be purchased") little hybrids?

If it worked 30-odd years ago, why not try it again?

Problem is, this is not going to hurt the yuppies like it's hurting our older folks (like my Mom )... on a relatively-low fixed income, and often driving a huge/old, but reliable, family sedan.

I read (or heard?) where a great deal of hostility is being levelled at the working class folks gas station attendants for the prices/shortages... I might suggest all that pent-up frustration be focused on the oil industry execs. If I we're them, I'd not be leaving my guarded & controlled-access estate without some kevlar & in a armored limo. But then again, the only real justice is after we die, eh? And, is one of those SOBs worth spending the rest of your life on death row or in the pen? Another one of 'em would just step up to fill the void...

An apt acronym from The Basic School comes to mind... BOHICA: Bend Over... Here It Comes Again.

May God bless America ... cuz she sure needs it about now.
