21gal tank fill and exhaust ports...

Picked up a 21gallon tank from a person here in CO. Got two questions...

One...
The original 15/16 gallon tank has two, smaller fill and breather taps, one approximately is 1" and the other 0.5". Both extend 3/4" to allow a hose clamp to fasten the hoses on it. The 21 gallon tank I just picked up is set up a little different. There is about a 6" long, 2.5"dia tap that extends from the tank where the fill tube would tie onto. I'm now thinking this tank is for a jeep that has the gas cap on the side of the body. Mine is on the back. Regardless of position, can I still modify this to fit? Has anyone ran into this? Talk about p.o'd once I realized this. $125 for it....and probably $100 for misc pieces to make it work. Tell me there's a simple fix.

Two...
I posted a couple weeks ago about thinking my 15/16 gallon tank was only 10gallon. Simple reason is that a piece might have fallen from the sender assy. Curiosity killed the cat, and I pulled the sender from this tank. The tank is roughly 14" deep, and the sender only goes into the tank 8". Hmmm....how does this sender pick up the extra 6" of fuel, or should it be this short?

Thanks fellas....

The pickup strainer sock that should be on the end of the pickup tube is about 3" to 4" long, and the tube inside it goes to the bottom.

Crap...just what I thought. No strainer sock and I bet more than anything the sender's for a 15 gallon tank! Any good online mfgrs to order one from online?

Any ideas whether the gas tank itself will work?

Not sure, but I'd be concerned. The frame rails on YJs and later Jeeps are farther apart than your CJ. If the tank extends to the frame rails on a late-model, it won't fit between them on your CJ. Time to break ouyt the tape measure.

The CJ frame rails are 36" apart in the rear. I think the YJ is 36" also.

Re: 21gal tank fill and exhaust ports...

I've got clearance, Clarance. We'll just see what kind of filler tubes can be modified to go from my gas cap to the port on the tank itself. I'll try and load up a couple pictures of what the hell I'm talking about....it's tough to write down.

I think the tank I bought is for a 70-77 after doing reasearch...

This is what I bought....

Notice the large 2-1/2" o.d. filler port w/ the small exhaust port above it.

This is what I really needed....
