D44 gear pattern - I think i\'m there

I think I'm good to go, but would like some additional comments. Already read through FSM/Yukon set-up etc. Their diagrams lack much in terms of real world patterns.

This is on a rear G. Waggy 44 - used 4.56 gears. B/L is at 0.006" and pattern is same in 4 different locations.

the drive side looks a little to high to me and the coast side looks like it should be moved more to the center

My pinion was moved 0.005" away from the ring to achieve those patterns. Before that, the pinion was definetly too close on the coast side. According to the Yukon set-up instructions, they recommend to pay attention to the coast side when setting up used gears. How valid is that? They also say not to worry about heel-toe alignment, as long as you're centered face to root and your BL is within spec.

Drive side is shallow and the coast side doesn't look the way I would want it (not to say you will have a problem).

If you go deeper the backlash will change and then you will have to re-shim the carrier too.

I'll assume that those are brand spanking new gears... if so I would keep messing with it. Gears that have been run are a different thing, I normally leave a little extra backlash and just try to center the faces best I can.

Take your time, the problem typically comes from not having enough small shims to stack for little changes.

Thanks Dale.

I read it, printed it out, marked my notes... Good write-up. These are used gears. The Yukon write-up said to focus on the coast side for used gears. I'll add 002 to 003 to the pinion, open up the BL and see where I'm at.

I added 0.003" to my pinion back lash is at 0.007". And I am getting mixed thoughts on these used gears.

Drive seems to indicate I need to go deeper, coast seems to indicate I'm too deep (apparent flat line at the root). Your thoughts?

Oh, and I changed colors to see if that'd help me read the pattern better.

Used gears (or maybe just the very used ones I have reset) normally have a wear pattern that you can see. I have just tried to make the new pattern match the old. Always seemed that the contact patch got much larger when the setup came together.

Try moving a small amount of shim from one side of the carrier to the other. If you end up with too small backlash take a little back out of the pinion.

Contact is on the faces so that's good, go with the pattern you feel comfortable with. There's some give and take that won't make any difference.

I added 0.001" more to the pinion and the coast pattern seemed a little better after I played with the BL. Like you said, used gears can be buggers. My new ones in the front were easy. Patterns were very good and easy to read.

I just finished wire brushing the rear tonight, ready for paint tomorrow. Only things left are lug nuts and U-Joint U-bolts and I'm ready to try them out. I'll let you guys know how the f/r E-lockers work.

I'll likely not try used gears again. Paid $80 for them off ebay, whereas I later found a new set of Yukon's for $130.
