1976 CJ5 - Gross Weight

A friend owns a 1976 CJ5 6 cyl and needs to tow it from Montana to CA. She needs to know the approximate gross vehicle weight of the jeep. Any idea? Thanks.

Re: 1976 CJ5 - Gross Weight

Here's a ballpark....

1985 (with 258)....

CJ-7 3,750 lbs. (1)
Scrambler 4,150 lbs.

(1) GVWR for hardtop with heavy-duty suspension: 4,150 lbs.

While a CJ-5 should be slightly lighter if you have a 304 with a T18 (or some other heavy transmission) it comes out about the same.

Would bet if you go to your local grain elevator or truck stop scale that you weight over 3,500 and less than 2 ton, plus or minus the junk that you have cut off or added.

I think you are needing the curb weight. The gross vehicle weight is the maximum loaded and towing.

Re: 1976 CJ5 - Gross Weight

curb weight for a 4 cylinger 1995 wrangler is 2934 lbs

for the 6 cyl is 3083 lbs

doesnt specifiy for top types, both manual trans, no specs given for auto. found on MSNs auto section.

adjust for CJ5 prolly in the 2800 range......a good estimate would prolly be around 3000 to play it safe

hope thats some help *shrug*

I'm ashamed to admit what my "PIG"(cj7) weighs.

Was that before you cut down the front bumper?

Both of you have heavy winches (sure hope I spelled that correctly).
