Can\'t seem to find a T18, what else can I do.

I need to get some gearing in my jeep.
79 CJ5 4.2 with 3 spd Stock Drivetrain
The ever elusive T18 is proving well...Elusive.
What are my other options?
Is the Terra low kit worth it?
SM420 perhaps.
Axles are getting regeared as low as I can stand it and have it still be somewhat highway driveable (WIth 33's what would that be anyways?).

I am also about to do some welding on my frame. I thought there were some caveats (future cracking). Who has successfully patched their frame?

THanks,

Andrew

what's your budget for the T-18?
There are guys that sell them remaned with warranty for about $1,200.00
Otherwise, get a longshaft T-18 out of a J-truck and convert it.
or
Put a low kit in your transfer case.....

For patching the frame: make sure you plate it. Don't just weld a crack back together, weld a plate over it too.

just keep an eye on Ebay. But like Aaron said, you can always go Reman. Hell I think I just read recently that PArts Mike has T-18's with D300 Adapters for $1200 or something like that.

I was running 4:56 with my 33x12.50's, when I had a standard now that I have an auto highway driving sucks,, 55 and still get a fair gas mileage and keep it running cool.
I would suggest 4:10's for the 33's on highway with a 4:1 t case conversion for off road. That would be the best of both worlds.
Can't help any on the T-18 delima

Re: Can\'t seem to find a T18, what else can I do.

NP435 is (IMHO) the next best swap.
Has an even lower 1st gear than the T18.
You will need an adapter, but both Novak and Advance Adapt have them.

Here is some good info on Tranny swaps.
Novak Tranny Knowlege Base

At the risk of getting this bumped to the for sale section.
If you are interested in the NP435 swap, I have a couple for sale.
