York OBA shaft seal

The shaft seal has a plastic ring, I broke it getting the seal off. Is this plastic ring necessary? How the heck did anyone get it off successfully without breaking it? The ring is smaller than the key on the crankshaft, mine wouldn't come off until it broke. Do I need it or not? What was others experiences with this. I have read several write-ups and have an York manual and the ring never seemed like an issue.

Re: York OBA shaft seal

I figure if you have to take the York apart, you might as well get one at a junkyard. Never took mine apart, just junked it, then took it apart to find I broke the rod.

Re: York OBA shaft seal

I didn't have to take it apart I am plugging an oil passage to prevent blowby. Anyway, I don't think I need it and I am going to pick up a spare since I sold my last spare on e-bay.

Re: York OBA shaft seal

I'm sure it's necessary to prevent your seal from leaking. Without it, the oil seal may not have any tension from the spring assmbly.

I used two screwdrivers to get mine out, just pried on the whole seal/spring assembly and it all came out in one piece.
