Can you run a \'97 TJ w/o the front shaft?

OK - I feel like I should know this, but I am not 100% sure and thought I better check.
Got a customer with a '97 TJ 5spd who wants his front regeared. He bought a complete rear already geared. He wants me to regear the front tomorrow and wants to drive it home and put the rear in himself.

Any reason you can't drive it w/o the front shaft?

And for that matter, since it is not a disco front, all the 2wd/4wd disconnect happens in the T/C by all rights it seems like he really doesn't need to pull the front shaft as long as he doesn't try to put it in 4wd?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Not 100% becouse I don't know TJ's but...
1. Front drive shaft should not spin in 4wd.
2. Even if #1 is incorrect, the front hubs are not engaged, so the TC will not have to be in the middle of two differing gear sets w/ traction.

I know a few YJ owners running in 2wd, saving up for the front gears.

That is part of the problem/question. TJ D30 has no hubs.
Therefore - Front is always turning. Just don't know how the T/C "sees" this and if it cares.

theres no problem.. and, as long as he doesn't put it in 4wd, he'd be ok without pulling it. I have the hub conversion on mine and it's no different
