Rear track bar in YJ - Do I really need it

Hey guys,

I'm putting that 8.25 axle in the YJ tomorrow and have a question about the rear track bar. I guess Cherokees don't have a rear track bar because the 8.25 doesn't have a mount on the axle for it.

So my question is, is the rear track bar really necessary? Or can I get away with not having to fab up a bracket to get welded onto the axle so i can have the rear trackbar. i know that it's suppose to stop the side to side movement of the axle, but does it really make that much of a difference with leaf springs?

is it because the cherokee is a unibody that it doesn't have the rear trackbar?

would i get more flex from the rear if i didn't have the rear trackbar in?

Thanks.

Re: Rear track bar in YJ - Do I really need it

I did some more searching around, and I seem to have found that I can do away with the rear trackbar. And that there is mixed feelings about the front(I already knew that, and wasn't planning on removing it anyway).

Cherokees do without a rear tracbar. They only have one at the front because of the coil setup.

Re: Rear track bar in YJ - Do I really need it

Don't bother with the track bar on the rear of your YJ. Save your time, save your money, they are not needed on the rear of a leaf sprung YJ.
As for the front? Are you swapping in a new front axle as well? If so, I WOULD take the time to put a track bar on the front. If you are leaving the D30 in the front... Keep the track bar hooked up.
The Ideal angle for the front track bar is to be parelle with the drag link.

Re: Rear track bar in YJ - Do I really need it

While getting my Jeep ready for the summer last month I noticed that my rear track bar was just resting and bouncing on the axle. All the welds had broken. I have no idea how long it's been like that. I took it for a drive to see if I could notice a difference (hasn't been driven on the road in a while). I would say that it is slightly looser in the back but fine on the road even with a 6" lift and 35s.

How is it any worse than a CJ which has the same setup but no track bar?

Re: Rear track bar in YJ - Do I really need it

It is not a lot different than a CJ... CJ Leafs are not as wide as YJ's.... That really don't make a difference.

It IS much different than a TJ.... Driving a TJ with no track bar is not recomended.
