Corvette alternator in a CJ and alternator ???

My alternator is making a lot of noise. LOL. It's been getting worse for years.

I know a 100+ amp Corvette was discussed to be a direct replacement, but I can find nothing with the search function.

Does a higher output alternator rob power all the time or is that dictated by the amp draw. I mean should a choose a optimal size? I have a rarely used wench.

TIA

An alternator's power draw is proportional to how much it's actually putting out, not how much it could put out.

The only penalties for having an oversized alternator are the extra weight, room under the hood, maybe a tiny amount more drag because it needs a larger drive belt. Nothing significant.

Re: Corvette alternator in a CJ and alternator ??

I replaced the 63 amp old style alternator in my work truck with a mini OEM from a Camaro. 105 amps and it fit in the bracket for the 63 amp fullsized alternator. It wires in different, needs a resistor to excite it, ran the exciter to the old Alt gage. Found the wiring diagram at Novasource.com .

Re: Corvette alternator in a CJ and alternator ??

I bought a high output alternator from www.4alterstart.com 2 weeks ago. It arrived in 2 days and was just under $100. That was for the 130 amp version that puts out 55 amps at 800 engine rpm so they advertise. It replaced my 63 amp alternator that could barely keep up with the load now that I have a taurus fan. This one keeps above 12 volts at idle and it is the same case as the 63 amp alternator. That made it a simple bolt in.

Re: Corvette alternator in a CJ and alternator ??

That was my problem, the old 63 could keep the syatem charged with electric fans. Now everything stays charged up even in slow city traffic. Mine is the small case but the mounting ears are the same position and spread as the 63.

Mr. Greenboy, could you say again the web site for the alternator wiring diagram? novasource.com didn't work for me. Tanks.

Sorry about that, lost that link on my last reformat. This is the one I used for conversion from 63 to 105 amp alternator, http://www.novaresource.org/alternator.htm

Re: Corvette alternator in a CJ and alternator ??

Larry you can get new/used easy on this one and it's a drop in and 94A. 85 delta 88 with a 307. Same case size, mounts, plugs and pulley. They are cheap too and easy to find in yards if you want used. Just take your old one to match since I think they offer a couple different ones. How do I know it works......last 3 that I put on CJ's came off those.
