Set back on the 5

I thought I had the problem with the gears on the 5 narrowed down to the tranny, but as luck would have it after I got a deal on a new tranny I disassembled things to find that it was actualy the T case, Intermediate berrings were out and the po had run it until the gears met the berrings in the wrong spot... So I am looking for a d-18 if anyone has one occupying space. I would fix this one but it seems one hole in the case for th intermediate shaft has been worn bigger than the other making re asembly impossible without some welding and machining on the case.

Re: Set back on the 5

If it has the 1-1/8" intermediate shaft, you can either have the hole enlarged for the 1-1/4" shaft or find a dana 20 case (dana 18 & 20 are the same for the same size shaft) and swap your internals to that. The 1-1/8 and 1-1/4 use the same intermediate gear with different bearings to make up the difference in the shaft size.

Re: Set back on the 5

What gears do you need? I have a bunch of old 18/20 gears lying around, a couple of 20 cases too....get me the # stamped on the gears you need and I'll see what I can do.

Re: Set back on the 5

Well randy I would love to take you up on that but I went to look at the gears for numbers and scraped off a bunch of dried oil, and the case had a big crack in it. So I am looking for a new to me one..

Re: Set back on the 5

Bummer. I have a good D20 here, but shipping would be too much. Good Luck!

Check local yards for a 71-73 Jeepster. They have centered flanged 44 rear ends, usually they go cheap, and then you could use a 20 case. Just an Idea...

Re: Set back on the 5

Well I've got a D20 laying around that works. It was under my Jeep at the first Bash I was at. I was told it had a bearing going, so I swapped it and the noise was still there which makes me think its a tranny issue and not the tcase, so I believe the tcase to be good. Shipping won't be cheap though, so let me know and we can figure something out.
