HEI igniton trouble

I have forgotten how to test an hei system.

Problem is intermitant. When I have fire it starts and runs great, but like now I have no fire. Last time this happened I changed the module under the cap and it went to working again. Ran great. Went out to start it today and thud nothing. Check power to dist is fine, But no fire.

Now since it has been an eternity since I had trouble with an hei system tell me what I am forgetting??

Gound wire to the module inside the distributor?

Did you check the +12 at the distributor?

Some of the mud crawled over from the TJ?

Not much else to go wrong.

Re: HEI igniton trouble

Tried all that dale,, and since I have not compleetly cleaned the tj,, that could be it.

I may have found the problem that is if 1 = Infinity

On my meter when i set to ohms I get 1 on the readout. When I check the Cap the way described in the article Leve left, I have nothing on any portion or acrost any pole. If that is in fact infinity then I have a bad coil.

Re: HEI igniton trouble

If the meter is reading the same with the leads not connected to anything.. that's infinity! If the reading is infinity, check to make sure the the coil resistance is not over the resistance of the meter setting.

The reading of "1" may accurately reflect the winding resistance, which can be very low.

Check your meter by shorting the meter connectors together... that's now zero Ohms.

Re: HEI igniton trouble

Good troubleshooting page LEVE.

Call me if you need help with the meter Jeff.

Now if you are checking like this picture....

.... and you get a high resistance (I'm thinking you have that type cap with the coil in it).

Remove the four screws that hold the coil down and you will find a spring in the center of a rubber pad. Make sure that is clean and has some dielectric grease on it.

But it is likely that Haspin Mud.... it has been slowly taking over my garage, how do those chunks move by themselves?

Re: HEI igniton trouble

Right dale when I check it that way I get no change in the meter but when i cross the leads I get 1.2 or.12 depending on wether I set on High ohms or low ohms. Checked and cleaned under the coil and the spring. Although mine does not have the grease in it it is clean. I swept in the garage today because it was nice out and could open the doors, I had a pile of dirt and dust about 1 inch thick and 3 foot acrost. And I have not even been doing much grinding since the last shop cleaup day!!

Re: HEI igniton trouble

That coil is good. It's showing a low ohm resistance... like almost zero... since when you short the two leads together you get the same reading as you do when you measure the coil.

Re: HEI igniton trouble

No when I short the leads together I get a higher reading, It will start out at 12 but settle on a lower number.
