Re: batteries....which are the better ones?

I picked up an Optima red top from Autozone for around $100. It will sit for up to a few weeks at a time and it always starts right up.

I've got the yellow top in my cj. I've gone a month and a half and it starts right up, but they are not cheap.

Re: batteries....which are the better ones?

Any of the Optimas will do well for you. With yours being a DD, I would think the red top would suit you better (It is made for more short charge cycles).

Re: batteries....which are the better ones?

You may wnat to check you local Sams Warehouse store, if I remember correctly, last time I was i there (and that has been quite a while) they had the sealed gel batteries. Can't remember if they were Optimas though, you can probably check their web page and see if they have better pricing.

Re: batteries....which are the better ones?

Talk to Bill C about the differences, he knows all about them. He also will tell you to get a Red Top...Quit looking at cheaper "alternatives". Just go and get the good one...

My Red Top story...While at URE on a night run, Keith's (Ricochet) alternator went belly up and killed his battery...We took my red top out and stuck it in Keith's Jeep and his in mine...jump started my Jeep and headed back for camp. 20 minutes later roll into ACG I've gotten some charge into Keith's battery and he's made it back to camp on the battery (running his fan, HEI and lights). Swap the batteries around and the red top that he had been running on for 20 minutes started my Jeep up...without any complaint...Could this have happend with any other battery? Well I'm sure you could find another brand that would...but for me, the red top is a known commodity.

Re: batteries....which are the better ones?

I just got a Optima gel cell for the cj5. Reason I did is my parts guy who has never lead me wron (If he does not know he says I don't Know) was telling me he has seen the evolution of the Optmia to the Exide. Fact is acording to him that the inventor of the Optima had a falling out with the company and went to work for Exide and low and behold shortly after Exide started selling Orbitals. I have 2 in my Diesle that are dated 1999 and the new one in my 5. I don't concider them a cheap alternative just less expensive. Same waranty, And I know the shop I am buying from is good for it, But I don't think you could go wrong either way.
