Dana 44 Cherokee?

I saw an ad in the paper for a rear axle, it said it was out of a Cherokee.
Are these out there and do they fit the YJ?
Are they desireable or is it better to go with an 8.8?

Re: Dana 44 Cherokee?

This one is highly debated.
44 or 8.8
The 8.8 is supposidly stronger, but it has "C" clips. If it has disk's the clips don't matter.

I say which ever one you can get a better deal on.

Re: Dana 44 Cherokee?

Depends on what year cherokee.
Is this a FS or an XJ?

Both will work - with a couple gotchas

Watch the older FS - they are usually offset, which won't work.
And some of them were widetrack - not a bad thing, but will be a lot wider than your front.

If you get lucky and find an older (standard width) Cherokee with a centered diff - it is pretty much a bolt in.

Only other thing is the older FS probably has either 3.08 or 3.36 gears. You will probably have to regear to match any ratio found in a YJ.

Oh, yeah - if it happends to be out of a Grand Cherokee - it is most likely either NOT a D44 or is one of those funky aluminum ones - which you DON'T want.
