pretty sure i busted the weber....

so with all good intentions & a fist full of how-to's I went out & tried to tune the weber carb on the cj7...did the timing & everything, next day the thing will barely start, backfire like a mofo & otherwise mock my tune-up anyway it could...then I notice that I can litterally 'hear' gas being sprayed into the 1st barrel...from 5 feet away, not the air sucking in, but the gas spewing out the jet thing the question is, could I have busted something that would basically render the mixture screw useless & cause gas to flow like the mississippi on meth?

Re: pretty sure i busted the weber....

Backfiring, as in, up through the carb? out the back? That should be timing-related, I would think. ??

Too much gas would be choke related. If the choke is still on perhaps the mixture screw doesn't do anything?

How, and what, exactly, did you 'tune' on the carb?

Could be a stuck float too - stuck open - too much fuel. ??
Sorry, not much here for us to go on.

Good luck

Re: pretty sure i busted the weber....

uggg, I need to get out of the habit of changing several things at once (makes it hard to troubleshoot)
anyway, now I'm starting to think its the ignition system...I replaced the well-worn 1980's era coil with a new accell coil (the $30.00 one) & am thinking that may have speed up the demise of either the cap/rotor/or both since the symptoms I'm getting could also be a non-firing cylinder

I just picked up a new cap/rotor at lunch & will update this when I get them installed later today

(crosses fingers)

Re: pretty sure i busted the weber....

was the ignition system...although I have a nice (tail pipe) backfire issue if I pound on the gas in any gear higher then 1st...(I suspect this will go away with the rebuilt motorcraft 2100 carb headed my way)

the tuning of the carb was the generic weber howto for idle adjustment (my bad, I should have mentioned that) turn knob x in 2 turns etc...

it dawned on me that it probably wasn't the carb since it had ran fine one day & having done nothing it just stoped working...which points to an electrical <sp?> & learn
