CJ 5 Steering

Hey Guys,

I bought an 80 model CJ 5 a week or so ago...

It's great...beautiful machine...with the exception of one thing...BAD steering

This thing is almost uncontrollable over 45 mph.

A mechanic friend of mine said that he thought the "caster" was off...

Everything else is new...anyone have any thoughts...can caster make THAT much difference?

Re: CJ 5 Steering

Yes caster being off can cause lots of road wonder or darting.

A few other things to look at on that 80 CJ is weak spring mounts up front they are known for working loose. the rivets that they are installed with will loosen up and you may need to replace them or weld them back solid. loose u- bolts and broken leaf on the spring pack.

Big one; how tall are your shackles anything much longer than stock will give you a wild ride as well.
Also check the spring shackle bushings for wear or way too loose, shackles should be snug to the spring pack but not so tight it wont allow articulation.
