Park the jeep for winter Now it wont start

here Is the deal.

It wont start. The battery was dead and wouldnt take a charge.

I put in a brand new battery.

Still nothing

The voltmeter says 0v on the other side of the starter solenoid.

I put in a brand new starter solenoid. Still 0 volts but I can hear it clicking like it should.

At this point i have the starter out and wired but nothing happens. Am I wasting my time cause the starter needs to be grounded? or should i get it to turn over on the fender?

Other then that I am lost I have no idea why it wont start. any ideas

88 jeep wrangler wiring, but cj starter and external starter solenoid.

Thanks

Mike

Are your grounds and battery cables good?

Put your negative meter lead on the negative battery terminal.

Put your positive meter lead on the positive battery terminal.

You should read 12 volts.

Put your positive meter lead on the positive battery cable to the solenoid.

You should read 12 volts.

DO you read 12 volts at this point?

Are you sure you bought the right solenoid? There is one for automatic transmissions and one for manual transmissions. If you've got the wrong one it's heck trying to figure out the problem.

Have you removed the solenoid and manually applied 12 volts to engage the solenoid?

If that works, then see if you get continunity across the Big Solenoid contacts?

If that works, it's a matter of wiring the solenoid correctly.

I like John Strenk's thread on JU:

Re: Park the jeep for winter Now it wont start

Thanks for the help. As I was posting I realized that the starter needed to be grounded. I just went and put that back in and it started turning over finally. The old solenoid was shot. but the engine was kind of seized from sitting, so I took the fan off and manually turned it over and it finally started.

It just bothers me so much that everytime it sits it breaks. The garage is 25 feet away but I am laying in snow and working on it in 30 degree weather.

So from sitting this winter:
Lost 1 battery.
Solenoid broke.
Engine seized a little
spent 4hrs in the cold and snow working on it.
Got animals living in it.

What a pain in the ass.

Going to drive it in the garage and start in on the exsisting brake problem.

This year, take the battery out. Pull the spark plugs, put some oil in the cylinders and turn the engine over a couple times. This should make next year a little better.
