Time for a new transmission

My AX5 finally went belly up. I found a AX5 from a 97, will that fit into my 89 YJ? From my understanding and I can be wrong if I use my 89 bellhousing I wont have to change anything on the clutch side to make it work. If I use the 97 bellhousing I will have to replace most of the clutch system . Is that right?
