302 swap questions

Ive been doing research for a while on the 302 swap. The cj is set up right now with the 304 and T18.

From what I have researched so far it would seem that my Jeep T18 should bolt up to a 302, since the T150 does.

I should be able to use my stock 3core radiator because the hose locations are in the correct spot.

I need some engine mounts - novak or whatever.

Exhaust manifolds - will the mustang ones work?

Fuel pump- anyone have the part number for that pump that is supposed to fit in the CJ tank?

I found an '88 complete for not much cash. It comes with all accessories and wiring harness and ECM.

Does it make much difference between speed density or MAF, if I don't plan on modifying it?

How much time did it take to complete your swap?

I realize there is alot to this and I'm making this the abreviated version but is there anything I'm missing?

Re: 302 swap questions

Check my site: http://zimm17.com

Go with Mountain Offroad Enterprises engine mounts. Best ones you can get. (M.O.R.E.) You want the bombproof ones.

http://www.mountainoffroad.com/more.htm

Stock radiator should work. If you overheat, get an aluminum crossflow 2 core race car unit.

Stock manifolds worked on mine with a 1" body lift. I swapped to a hydraulic clutch because I went with a world class T-5 jeep tranny.

Advance adaptors sells any little part you might need like a specialized pilot bushing.

I used an inline fuel pump. The holley was junk. Spent about $250 for a bosch unit. Got it and the clutch stuff from: http://www.autoworks.cc/parts_hot_list.htm

I bend up my own stainless steel 3/8 supply line and used the stock 5/16" for the return to the tank.

Email me for any specifics: [email protected]

Re: 302 swap questions

I swapped a fule injected 5.0 into my better 1970 Ford a few years back. Used an off the shelf pump from Oreilly's $55.00 and change. If you'd like I can do some digging and get the number. It's run goos for me since the install.

I also have the link to a rightup similar to mine somewhere. It's not a Jeep writeup but explains the connections and odds and end well. I dig and see what I find there. Oh yeah, get a bellhousing for your 302.

Good to see you hanging out some Roland.

Problems with the 304? or just want to move into fuel injection and this decade?

Maybe a sloppy Haspin run before you take it apart??

Re: 302 swap questions

Thanks for the info guys, any reason not to use the speed density set up?

Zimm - did you find the wiring info online or did you have a manual? Its the only thing I'm not completely sure about.

A buddy mentioned something about a vss sensor, but I didn't see anything about it in any of the writeups - does the ECM not need that info?

Jdogg - thanks for the writeup, that should help quite a bit.

Yeah the 304 is tired and I don't want to dump money into old technology...

Re: 302 swap questions

Ford motorsport has a manual for it that comes with their mass air conversion kit. I don't know how to set up the speed density setup, but it will work for you.

You don't need a VSS to get started out, but I'm going to add it after driving the setup for 2 years. It will hold the idle up while coasting to a stop with a manual tranny to keep it from stalling or surging.

Don't forget you need special fuel injector rubber fuel line- the cheap stuff will blow under the 40psi. Get fuel injection clamps too.
