TJ Exhaust Manifold

Question for you guys.. My girlfriends 98 Wranger 4.0L is on like its 2nd exhaust manifold. Now this second one which is only about 1.5yrs old sounds like its developed a crack again. I wasnt around when the first 2 were replaced, but a few people have told me that this is a common problem? If so, where does the crack appear? I can hear a slight exhaust leak, worse under load, but i cannot locate it. Its comming from under the hood, so i am assuming manifold failure again. I can't see spending $300 on the same factory piece of crap that is going to fail after just a short while. Are there any quality aftermarket headers that you guys can recommend?

Thanks,

Paul

Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold

I would check out the manifold gaskets and bolts to make sure they have not loosened up. This is a reoccurring issue on some models.

I would recomend Borla or similar. They seem to be really good and give it a nice rumble.. Under no circumstances would I put on a factory,, It is just gonna Fail again.

Also report that POS to the National Highway Safety Institute (Or something like that). Complaints are starting to add up and if people continue to complain eventually maybe there will be a recall and you will get reimbursed for your troubles.

Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold

I doubt it... Its got around 135K mi on it. Thing is that there is probably only 15-20K on the newest manifold. I asked her about its previous failure and she said that the mechanic said that the crack was between the runners.

Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold

Mine 98 cracked around the collector. Replaced it with a banks header and have not looked back. Supposedly 98's are really prone to cracking around the welds.

Re: TJ Exhaust Manifold

TJ exhaust mainfolds crack all the time. There are some aftermarket ones out there that allow some expansion. Otherwise look into a several hundred dollar chrome or stainless header.
