tailpipe location

I need to have some exhaust work done and wanted to know where I should route my tailpipe to avoid having the fumes sucked back in on me. Thanks.

Re: tailpipe location

Tape some long pieces of yarn to the body at all of the possible exit points. Then have somebody in a car watch while you drive. Pick one where the yarn is stretched away from the body, if there is such a place.

Anything else is pure guesswork, and guesses about aerodynamics are very often wrong.

Re: tailpipe location

I thought some people routed it out the side, I didn't know if in front of behind the wheel would be best. What about a pipe that is turned down at the tip?

Re: tailpipe location

Check with your local DMV to see if there are any specific rules. I know that in Vermont where I live the Exhaust has to exit the vehical behind the last operational window. So in a Jeep with a zip out window that means that the exhaust needs to exit out the back of the Jeep. In front of the wheels will not work where I live. Some states say that it is ok as long as the exhaust exits behind the last seat.

Re: tailpipe location

My tailpipe exits behind the driver’s side rear tire. I have never had a problem with overwhelming fumes when running with the bikini top or with the hard top on with the rear hatch open.
