Need some help ID\'ing an Engine/Intake Casting #

So when I purchased my CJ, I was told by the P.O. that the engine was out of a different vehicle, an earlier one. The body, etc, is an '85, but the motor, he stated, was out of a cherokee (if I remember.) The intake, however, is aluminum, i think, so the intake setup looks like a later model. See if you can help me out here.

Engine casting #, stamped on plate between #2,#3 cylinders:

205c17

Intake casting #'s, stamped by center of manifold:

32324441

the intake also has (what appears to be) a date on it....like it says 1.5.78 or something of the like......not sure if that's an actual date that's part of the casting process or some sort of code that just happens to look like a date.

help!

Don't forget that there is the XJ cherokee and the FSJ cherokee. The FSJ used the 4.2L, the XJ didn't use the inline 6 before 88. If your engine is from an earlier than 85 cherokee, it is the FSJ cherokee not the XJ cherokee.

Best I can tell looking at the amcencyclopedia:

1978 (1969?), 232 cid, May 17th

2 - indicates year, but only in pattern. Given what you've said about what you know about the engine, it would most likely have to be 1978 (closest other years are 69 & 87)

05 - indicates month, May.

C - indicates 232 cid (looks like the 258, but not). This part is confusing, b/c off-road says this engine was standard in 65-70 FSJs and 72-78 CJs. So it is possible that the build year might be 1969 instead of 1978.

17 - indicates build day, 17th.
