Red hot muffler what would cause it!!!

Im sure some of you read my other post, so if you dont have a fire ext. GO GET THEM!!! It saved my jeep. Ok enough of that.

So im open to idea's of what caused my muffler to turn red hot. A tech buddy of mine said check the vacume advance. So that is going to be my first step. I really dont think the exhaust got plugged with a nest or anything. It sounded the same and it is a 3in tailpipe so i would think it would blow out easily.

So im up for suggestions.

I had my headers turn red hot. Timing chain strectched and jump a tooth. Threw off the timing'
Also, check for VERY rich condition, or misfires, sending unburnt fuel into exhaust

Jim.... I seriously don't think its your advance. Your vaccuum advance will only kick in when you are giving it throttle. It shouldn't have any vaccuum at idle. Might have jumped a tooth like previously stated. I'd hook up a timing light to see it thats it.

Re: Red hot muffler what would cause it!!!

Jim years back I did some carb work on an ol hotrod i had that had 3 deuces on it. one night I fired it up to take it out for a run and let it idle to warm up.It sounded good but when I got in the floor boards were hot I got out looked under the car and both pipes from the headers to the muffler were red hot and glowing. i shut it down and started to troubleshoot it. The problem was found a few days later that I had raw gas running down the exhaust and when it got hot enough there it was igniting in the pipe, this may or may not be the case with yours.

Re: Red hot muffler what would cause it!!!

It doesnt look like i am going to be able to get the jeep in the my shop till the weekend or late week.. My Dad has a new/old,old lathe he just bought apart cleaning and painting it. So until he is done i really dont want to just barge in. So it will give me some time to think about it.

Once i get it inside im going to dig into it. I thought about checking the timing tonight but its just tooooo damn cold out. I ordered another cat and muffler today. Cause im sure the cat that is on it now is shot, and the muffler maybe ok, but i dont really want it any louder then it was.

Ill update as i find out whats going on. After thinking about it this weekend, i am wondering about the carb maybe. The jeep sits so much that the carb is always drying out, so im sure its crappy in side. But for it to turn the muffler red it would have had to been flooding out so bad that it wouldnt have been idling nicely and it was idling normal.

I dont know. Im still bummed about the whole deal.
