OT - Free coal!

Just some pics of the big dooing in Alliance this morning. 45 coal cars (33 loaded/12 empty) jumped the tracks east of town. Just some random pics for all you looky loos!

All pics are off the KCOW/Double Q country's news web site. (don't know if there is any leagle mumble jumble in reposting pics!)

Re: OT - Free coal!

Nope. The empty train was tied up dead (no crew on board)
and the loaded train (the one that actually was moving and caused the accident) derailed about 50 cars behind the power. I'd guess each train had about 125 cars.

Re: OT - Free coal!

And here I thought all I had to do was be bad all year long and Santa would bring the coal. Apparently I need to get into the rail business for all my coal needs.

Re: OT - Free coal!

What I've always found amazing about train derailments is the response time of crews and machinery used to clean such a huge mess up. I spent a couple of summers working on a ranch in the boonies (Ansley) the biggest town within about an hour and a half was Broken Bow (about 1200 I think). Train wreck about fives miles from the home where I stayed. Clean up was in full swing within a couple of hours and trains started using the parralel tracks within two days I think. Equipment I didn't know existed seemed to come from nowhere. Still makes me wonder even now that I'm older and see RR fleet vehicles everywhere I go.

Re: OT - Free coal!

Yes, I remember being very impressed with a derail response team back in the 70s. An "old guy" with them made my eyes bug when he layed down on a railroad car which was on it's side to grab and lift a one inch plus steel cable and its hook (still bigger than my waist) and yank it up there like it was a grass rope. it was in excess of 100 degrees that day I dont know how he could stand his shritless body against that hot metal. Ah, my coal mining days, not sure I really miss them... Yeah, I guess I do... sometimes.

Re: OT - Free coal!

Bummer. I was hoping to read that I could get free coal around me. That would beat dealing with wet firewood after all the snow and rain around me. HAHA
