My attempt at the HEI conversion

Well Here it is. I removed my MSD and installed this. Fired fight up. Now I just have to set the timing and take it for a ride. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

hehehe.. a romex connector.... i now know what that is... hehehehe... and the conduit.. but that looks like you can only have 15 conductors in that size box.. [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Do they make one for the plasic boxes? I thought they were all pipe couplings. I hope he moves all those splices inside the box.

The box is a good idea. I had been looking at those types at Lowe's but found something else at Radio Shack.

I'm with John on the splices, better off inside the box and a grommet would make it perfect.

Actually I don't care much for those type splices and would solder the wires together and use heat shrink. But that should work.

I see that you used a harness for the TFI coil. That makes it cleaner and more vibration proof. Didn't try the fuse holder harness thing huh (that's OK, I will).

Don't see a heat-sink in the pictures, did you cut a hole in the box so that the heat-sink is outside in the cool air?

Hope you don't mind if I steal your pictures (sooner or later).

It is actually sitting on a heat sink in there, just can't see it in the pic. Even though the box looks plastic, it is a metal one. I'm not one for soldering anything. I've always used these types of connectors with great success. All the wires will be tapes up nice and tight.

Great idea - the electrical box. Actually the metal box itself is probably enough heat sink. Probably better than a finned heat sink inside the box. That way the heat gets carried outside rather than just heating the air inside the box.

Interesting to note - good crimped connections are actually better than solder - according to Electrical Engineering studies. The crimp "hammer welds" the metals together - an actual molecular merge - without a third metal (solder) between them. But they have to be firmly crimped!

The operative word there is 'good', right? Crimp connections done with the $100+ multi-stage ratcheting crimp tools are (or at least used to be) the only connections approved for certain military and aerospace applications.

But that's not the same thing as a crimp done with the $5 do-everything tool from Auto Zone. I've never thought of that technique as acceptable for more than a temporary patch. Too many go bad after a few years of muddy salt water and vibration.
