Disposing of Coolant, where ?

so since my jeep is sitting parked with a big leak in the radiator ..... eventually im going to have to replace it.... and thus i will have to drain the coolant....

Where can one dispose of Coolant? is that a drain safe fluid? or will a car parts store accept it like they do oil?

in the past i put it down the drain....but i didnt reallly think before i did it....

Just trying to be a lil greener.

thanks!

Um I would not put it down the drain!!
Around here in NH the local dump/Landfill will have a place for that stuff.. Some shops will take it for free.

Down the drain..

It's really only bad when cats/dogs/animals/people start drinking it.

I think.. I remember some guy telling me that it actually helps the bacteria cultures at the plant (the glucose) and breaksdown quickly..

but hey.. I may be wrong.. I always dump it down the toilet slowly over 4 or 5 flushes.

Do a Google search for "antifreeze disposal"....

Then after you get thousands of hits... do a search of the results for your City and State.

Should provide you with a place to drop it off.

I happen to have a tire store near my house that will take all of the waste used liquids at no charge. And why not they get paid for the lubricants by recyclers.

Re: Disposing of Coolant, where ?

Okay, I'm cheap... But, why not recycle/re-use it?

Unless contaminated w/ a substantial amount of oil or other non-coolant liquid, I just strain it through some good filter media (like an old - but not too old [thin] - cotton t-shirt or the like) a couple of times (dumping the last few ounces of really nasty [brown] settlings out) and re-use it. Add new coolant or water, as required, to get appropriate mixture/freeze level.

I'm not 'green' , just cheap... real cheap. A product of Depression-era parents.

BTW, I just bought a gallon of anti-freeze at WalMart tonight... store brand was $7.54. That seemed high. Has coolant price(s) spiked... or has it been THAT LONG since I bought any?

7.54!!! I thought it was 3 something a gallon (even up here in Ak!?!?!)

At that price I guess I better stop feeding it to the neighborhood cats! I will have to go poke my head in the auto parts store sometime and see what the price is. It wasn't that long ago I bought a gallon of it, I don't remember it being that much!

Re: Disposing of Coolant, where ?

This thread came up a couple of years ago... and I did a little research... It's legal to pour down the drain and won't hurt the environment.
