Flywheel/ Flexplate ???

Quick question here. I have a 360 with a auto tranny and a 258 with standard flywheel. Can I use the one off the 360 so I can run an auto tranny behind the 258?? I know some motors are balanced with the flywheel! Just need to know if I need to find another one for the 258. I should know this but Ive been away from the project for sometime now and trying to get going in the right direction again!!!

Re: Flywheel/ Flexplate ???

first off if you are talking about automatic tranny's.. you are talking about flex plates.. flywheels are what manuals use with clutch's...

and you will need one for the 258... they are about $40

Yep! The 258 has the flywheel and the 360 has the flexplate! My question is, Will the flex plate from the 360 work on the the 258 ? Im putting the drivetrain from a wagoneer under my jeepster but I want the strait six instead of the 360.

No. They are balanced differently. The flexplate is balanced differently just like the manual transmission's flywheel.

Re: Flywheel/ Flexplate ???

you are not getting it.. flex plates are what is used with automatic tranny's.. they are thin.. and light.. while a flywheel is what is used with manual tranny's... they are thick and heavy...

i am just assuming that you have a tf727 behind the 360... and you want to use it behind the 258... you will need a flex plate for the 258... go to the autoparts store.. and get one for a 1980... the 258 was the base engine for non-california vehicles.... if you have a th400 then use the year 1973/74... one of those years was the last year for the 258 till 1980...

Re: Flywheel/ Flexplate ???

ya.. i guess that post up there by aaron871... doesnt tell you what you wanted either... and i must not have had my doomazz filter on when i read this post either.. since you also didnt specify what tranny... since so many of you call a flex plate a flywheel and vice versa... hell i even told you what to tell the auto parts store so you can get what you want.... Re: Flywheel/ Flexplate ???

Sorry about that! I read my post and no I didn't say it was a 727 tranny behind the 360. The TH400 totaly slipped my mind and when a said a standard flywheel behind the the 258 I meant that as in a Manual/ Standard tranny! My bad. I get what your saying about the years though. I was just wanting to know if they are balanced different and if I could use the one from the 360.... Im a little flustered right now because everytime I try to work on my project something comes up. It's been on going for about two years now!!!!!
