Stupid paint question

I have painted with Tractor supply enamle paint for several years now with no problems. Last night I was painting Aaron's grill, and got a slightly textured finnish??? I did change guns to a HVLP gun and this is the first batch I have shot with it. Any Ideas?? Temp was 65 deg in the shop and the texture is uniform.. It actualy looks decent but with a gloss finnish it is gonna look funny in the sun.

Re: Stupid paint question

I know it sounds stupid but all you need is practice. HVLP guns just work totally different. Fiddle with them knobs, pressures and more practice. I'm sure your first regular paint job sucked the first time, I know mine did.
You'll get it Jeff.

Re: Stupid paint question

Was the texture dry like overspray or wrinkled? In cold weather some paints will skrink on the outside where they flash off reducer more readily than the material closer to the cold metal. The metal will be colder than air temperature. I wrinkle the hood on my CJ a few weeks ago like that and I had Japan Drier in it too.

Re: Stupid paint question

More Wrinkled and a bit spotty. spot here, there, but all black,,, It was almost like I sprayed 2 diffrent thickness of paint, one dried fast the other sat,,, I was concerned with the temp, and kept it even and in the area of the garage that heats the best.

Re: Stupid paint question

Well better and worse,, Did one of those things I knew better than to do. shop was at about 55 deg, warmed up to about 60, wiped everything down and sprayed on a bit thicker. then got the bright Ideat to crank the heat to expediate dry time.... Well it also thins the paint as it warms. So I Have a great looking paint job with two big old runs... So some paper and elbow grees and one more coat...

You are right dave,,, those other knobs do do something... Learned most while cleaning it...

Re: Stupid paint question

The first time I used my HVLP gun to spray the same paint that I had used for years I got the same results. I was real unhappy with how my first few project came out. But once I figured out how the Paint gun wanted to work, and I learned how to fine tune it... It got much better.
I like to spray Hammerite, and I find that it works well when the paint us cut with thinner. I use one part paint, and 2 parts thinner, and then I add just a bit more thinner. And the Gun I use seems to like a very light paint flow. SO I use a little bit of paint, and I use about 3-5 coats (depending on what I am doing) applied about 10 min apart.

I was very suprised at how differnt the HVLP gun was from anything else I had used in the past.

Make sure your reducer and catylist is for 65 degrees F. The TE (transfer efficency) is higher the HVLP guns, so you may have to play with the adjustments a little. Some polyu's don't like ambient temps below 70d F.
Gnarls.
