Electric fuel pump in CJ tank

I have a 4.0L that I'd like to put in my CJ-7. My only snafu right now is fuel delivery.

Has anyone put a YJ fuel pump/sending unit into a CJ-7 tank? I generally remember the tanks looking similar, but I didnt pay close attention to the sending unit mounting.

I've had bad luck with high pressure inline fuel pumps in the past, I would much prefer to go in-tank with the pump.

Re: Electric fuel pump in CJ tank

Here 's a thought or 2 you didn't really ask for.

Why not just use the whole tank & pump for the donor vehicle? Might be easier to mount the tank than mod the CJ tank to accept the 4.0 pump/sender.

In-tank pumps are a mixed blessing. They tend to run cooler & last longer than external, but if they do puke on the road or trail, they are no fun to replace.

Re: Electric fuel pump in CJ tank

Unfortunately I didnt get the tank and pump from the donor vehicle. I bought this engine about 2 years ago, and have been running it in my full size Wagoneer since then. I have been using E2000 pumps in the Wagoneer, have been through about 4 fuel pumps so far.

Re: Electric fuel pump in CJ tank

I had some links that explained how you could put a pump in the CJ 15 gallon steel tank but can't find them now. I tried with my conversion but was unable to, the hole was too small and I didn't like the idea of the pump just swinging around in there. Another way was to get a sending unit/pump or complete tank from an 87 to 89 YJ that had the efi 4 cylinder engine but I was unable to find any good used tanks in my area. I bought a new tank, sending unit and pump from 4WDH and that has been working well for 3 years now.

Here is a good message board dealing with 4.0L conversions:
