4x4 wont go into 2h

Hey i have a lil bit of a problem with my jeeps 4x4. It is always in 4 wheel drive and wont go into 2.
I think its the transfer case but im not sure...
I can feel it shift from 4lo to neutral then it like skips 2h and goes straight to 4high. sometimes i can get it into 2h but it never stays it will just pop back out to neutral if i hit a bump or something and last time i tried putting it in 2high i was going up a hill and the u-joint went out on the rear drive shaft when it popped out oh 2h into neutral.
Anyone know what might be going on???? Its a 87 cj5 with a 3spd.

Sorry I dont think I can help on the problem other than maybe a detent is out on the shaft letting it drop out when it gets bumped

I'm guessing it's a Dana 20........

There should be two access holes that have springs and ball bearings on the top of the transfer case in line w/ the shift rods (I think).

Re: 4x4 wont go into 2h

there's that Wheel barrel rebuild again...

I had an issue with mine popping out of gear too. ended up one of my Springs for the Detent balls, that Aaron pointed out in his picture, had broken in half and thus my detent wasn't holding the shaft in place. replaced them and all has been good since.

Re: 4x4 wont go into 2h

That's not a D300 but the detents are very similar.

Does sound like a broken spring.

Try this:

Click on the image for a parts list.

This picture is not like any D300 I have had apart in that there are only two springs and balls (the top ones) and there are two interlock pins between the shift rods (horizontally), all shown as items 5 & 6.

If I remember correctly to remove the balls and springs all you have to do is unscrew the 4WD Light Switch and the plug beside it. Can't see that in the picture but you can if you remove the shift boots and the sheet metal they are mounted to.

Good Luck

Dale

Re: 4x4 wont go into 2h

D'oh ! What was I thinking... 87... YJ... NP231... even GP'ns post didn't get my attention.

Ah a 78 CJ-5, a noble creature with large ROUND eyes, hehe a face only one of us crazy mothers could love.

Would be a D20 like in Aaron's wheel barrel.

I haven't had a personal encounter with a D20 in years... sure as heck can't remember it. It was only a fling on the side anyway (someone else's T-Case) at that point in life I had an old Willys Wagon with a D18.

In keeping with all equal opportunity rules, here's the same look at a D20:
