Help!!!--258 problem

I have an 87 wrangler with an 89 4.2 . The valve train is making a lot of noises, but only after it warms up to normal operating temps. It has very good oil psi and I have changed the oil several times and have tried diffrent oil weights and addatives, but nothing works. When the engine is cold it sounds fine, but as soon as it warms up it starts tapping really bad

Very confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Re: Help!!!--258 problem

Clicking noises perhaps?

As the oil warms up, it thins out and makes problems more apparent. Pressure drops, and it probably has less lubricating properties.

The noise could the be partial or combined result of any of the reciprocating items in the valvetrain, such as valve stems, rockers and lifters. The cam wears as well, and clearances increase. The hydraulic lifters are designed to accomodate these changes, but over time they wear out as well or get gummed up.

I suspect you will have to replace some worn items in the valve train if you want a solution. If the noise isn't bad, it may not be worth it.

To change the lifters you have to remove the cylinder head.

Re: Help!!!--258 problem

what weigh oil are you running?

as a bandaid, you can switch to a heavier oil, e.g. 15w50 or 20w50

and put some marvel mystery oil in it like a week before you do the oil change.

Re: Help!!!--258 problem

I am currently running 20-50 w/lucas addative, still the same . I have also flushed w/ motor flush and I used some cd2 at the last oil change, didn't help!
