4.0 head swap exhaust manifold

I am going to do the 4.0 head swap on my 1988 YJ and was just wondering what you guys used for your exhaust manifold and head pipe. I was thinking of using a cherokee manifold and a YJ head pipe with a reducer on the end. Would this work? I am just trying to get the parts I need before hand becasue the closest auto parts store is 45 mins away. Thanks!

Re: 4.0 head swap exhaust manifold

I used a Borla header. Prolly wouldn't recommend it. Super, super nice header. Excellent quality. Bolt tabs were 1/2" thick (as opposed to 3/8" for the intake manifold) which was a major nightmare, and the header is really deeper than I would care for. The bottom of the header pipe is way too exposed as far as I'm concerned. Very expensive.

Warning about Cherokee manifolds: you may have a hard time finding one that isn't cracked. Which also means that even if you do find a good one, keep an eye on it.

I used one for a late 80's comanche. I wanted to keep the egr and it also has the O2 bung in case I want to go TBI. Had a local exhaust shop custome build a down pipe.

Re: 4.0 head swap exhaust manifold

There are two types of manifolds, YJs and some XJs have a center collector. When you get the mpi up and running, it will run lean until the computer learns it's new environment. And when you run lean this manifold will overheat and it will crack, no ifs. There is an XJ manifold that has a rear dump it is a lot less prone to cracking, the only down side to using this manifold is you will need to get a custom bent front pipe to go from the manifold to the cat(any exhaust shop can do this fairly cheaply).
