What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

Eye balled a Grand waggy at a yard a couple of weeks ago...finnaly got the yard owner to talk to me about it...He knows nothing more than it's a 79 and he has no idea why it was junked...he thinks everything worked...

What I could see...

V-8 - is this likely to be a 360 or a 304?
3sp auto - 727 or 999?
floor shifter for t-case - D300 or Quadratrack?
D44 up front (with disks)
D20 (I'm pretty sure) in back

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

This is what it should be:

V-8 - likely to be a 360
3sp auto - TH400
floor shifter for t-case - Quadratrack
D44 up front (with disks)
D44 in back

FYI, D20 is a transfer case, AMC 20 is a rear axle.

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

Thanks Will. Been doing some searching around...No '79 Grand Waggy...I'm pretty sure it said grand on it so...must be newer. As for the rear axle, the cover was round...looked like a dog bowl. Did any waggy come with an AMC 20? or could this be a case of it being swapped in (or me being crazy)?

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

I was given the drivetrain outa what I was told was a '79 Grand a few months ago. It was a 360/TH400/single-speed QT transfer case.

I've been told the TH400 used w/ the QT has a case specific to the QT case and is not much good for anything else. I also understand the single-speed QT unit is not worth much, but the 2spd QT is of 'some' value - whatever that means.

I was able to sell the TH400/QT locally for a few bucks, and am hanging on to the 360 for potential freshening & transplant into my currently motorless J-20... once THAT project bubbles up to the top of my rather lengthy 'TO-DO' list.

From what I've read, the older ('78 & earlier?) GW front D44's are more preferable for narrowing for CJ's... but I do not recall why. I think something to do w/ spindles or flat tops, or sumthin' like that. (Not much help am I? Sorry... )

EDIT add: My reference material says Waggys/GW's had AMC- 20's (round "dog dish" covers) from '76-86; D44's before & after those dates. However, I have a '78 Waggy w/ a D44 in the rear... that I believe is OE.

BTW Lomod, has yer buddy said anything about Oak Ridge yet? I've been wathchin', but have not seen anything as yet. Only 'bout a month to go... I'm getting anxious to get signed up - too much fun to miss out.

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

80 or 81 should be the first year with the AMC 20 rear. It was used till 86 as stated. Easiest way to tell is pre 80 or 81 has the front diff on the passenger side and after on the driver's side. If you can tell us that, we can help you id it. In 1984 jeep introduced the XJ. I don't know what year they started but they made a wagoneer package for it. When they did that, the FSJ was renamed the grand wagoneer.

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

The AMC 20 that came in those waggys is one tough SOB.
Not to be confused with the 2 peice corporate 20 that came in CJ's.
It's also my understanting that if it has a passenger side drop in the front, it is not quadratrack.

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

If in fact it is a late 70's waggie, and it has disk breaks, and the diff is on the passangers side... That front axle is a pretty darn nice junkyard score. A great swap to a CJ. It is a 30 spline D44, disk breaks, and the real nice touch is that it has flat top knuckles on both sides. A great axle if you are looking to upgrade to a D44 and spring over.

Re: What\'s in a Grand Waggy?

The AMC20 was first used in full-size Jeeps in 1980 and continued use until 1985. The name changed from Wagoneer to Grand Wagoneer in 1984 when AMC introduced the midsized XJ Cherokee, who's luxury model was called the Wagoneer.

The engine will be the AMC360, the transmission will be a TF727, and the tcase should be an NP228 (a few were ordered with an NP208, and have manual locking hubs on the front axles). '80-85 have vacuum disconect front axles, which are really of no use to a SWB Jeeper. '80-85 gear ratios were 2.73 standard, with 3.31 optional (towing package).

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head
