engine or ignition problem?

My 84 CJ-7 won't turn off. The only way I can get the engine to stop is to crank the ignition (which make the horrible grinding noise). Most of the time, after I do this I don't have them problem again. I replaced the ignition switch with a replacement switch I had lying around. But it still won't shut off.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Wal......(spits a shot of tobacco juice).... .. a stranger like yew prob'ly wouldn't know about this, but there is a little ol' terminal on the STARTER SOLENOID that ......(spits another shot of tobacco juice)... ... sends a blast of lec-tricity over to the coil so it can start the Jeep better and yew won't be still a-settin' thar when them rev-noors show up. Et dere little ol' pole on the solenoid is supposed to DISCONNECT when cranking is all over and the engine is goin'. Fer some reason, yers is a-stickin'......(spits another shot of tobacco juice).... and that is whut is making yer Jeep run n' run. You got to junk that solenoid and get chew a new one......(spit)....(drool)... And when you cross the river into Kentucky to git them parts, you best be careful, them boys around Tompkinsville has been know t' shoot first and ask questions later.
