Pics in \"The Pit\"

We went out to the "The Pit" last weekend to play on the lava flow. Here are a couple shoots of 'The Wall', it's a fun little climb . Thought you all might enjoy seeing what we wheel on over here.

That looks like fun! Got more pics on your website?

The Boss is talking about taking a trip to the Big Island for our 35th anniversary next year. If it happens, I WILL look you up!

That looks like sidewall-eating terrain.
What if you get near a hot spot? Tires start to melt?

Jim
I've been trying to find the time to start another web site but just haven't done it yet. I pretty much give up on the old site a few years ago but will move alot of the info to the new one when I get my a$$ in gear.

Please let me know before you book your trip and I'll see what good deals are happening at that time. And I'd be more then willing to take you and your's out to the flow, it's always fun to take people out there that haven't been there before. As a matter of fact, riding in the passenger seat in these pics is my brother-in-law. He was visiting from San Fransico and it was his frist ride in a rock crawler,,,,,,,,,I think he stained his pants .

Lucky that flow is about 100 years old,,,,,,a few weeks ago we hiked into the park where the active flow is,,,,,,that's something everyone should see at least once.

As for tire wear,,,,, this tire has about 25 hours of crawling in "The Pit" area. They don't last long,,,,,,,

Call me a midwest moron, but is that type of flow something that is available to see at anytime? What I'm asking is, does that thing go on non stop, 24/7/52?
If so, you may have just lured me into my next vacation.

Re: Pics in \"The Pit\"

The current phase of activity started January 3, 1983, erupting for over 20 years with a average of 130,000 gallons of molten rock every minute, pumping 2,500 tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere every day.
Since 1983, more than 575 acres of new land have been added to the "Big Island". I've backcountry hiked the park over two hundred times in the last 35 years and it still awes me every time I go. This last trip, we were cutoff by a "finger" flow and had to backtrack over a 3 day old flow that was hard on the surface but still glowing pink about 6" down in the cracks, this flow was about 50 yards wide, the soles of our shoes were melting by the time we got to the other side.. Me too! Wow, I grew up in Alaska 2 miles from a glacier, so I've seen PLENTY of ice, but never the HOT stuff
Between that and the USS Arizona memorial, I think I'll be booking a trip.
Thanks for spending my jeep money Wayne
