Back space question on a cj5 narrow track

Have a buddy who purchased 33-12.50 tires and ordered cj rims with 3.75 inch backspacing. He called this weekend and said that the tires only have about 1 inch clearance off of the springs. So my question is is the above set up wrong or did they send him the wrong rims? I have not gotten a chance to mesure them yet.

Re: Back space question on a cj5 narrow track

That is correct. The full floating front axles have the wheel mounting surface between the bearings so need a rim with the mounting surface near center. Thus, 3.75" for an 8" rim.

The YJ, XJ, MJ, TJ, etc. have the wheel mounting surface outside the wheel bearings. That is why they need wheels with more backspacing. That moves the center of the tire back so it is centered on the bearings.
