Weekend Score, and wheel questions.

Score #1 Woo hoo, two weekends ago I found a great stash at my dad's place. I am going to be building a small 4'x6' utility trailer to pull behind the YJ, and I found a set of hubs for it that are the same pattern (5 on 4-1/2) as best as I could tell. I didn't actually try them on a spare or anything, but I held them up the spare on the back of the Jeep and they looked like a dead ringer fit. Also found some used springs, hangers, ubolts, and a pipe to use for an axle. The old man even had a lot of the steel I would need to make the trailer frame.

Score #2: Then last Monday, I was talking to a friend at work and told him of my plans. He has a set (4) of 1/2 used 31x10.5 tires that he is going to give me for free.

Score #3: Then this Saturday, I was at a garage sale my grandma was having, and my brother-in-law brought a set of used factory 15" wheels from his 1995 Sonoma. Got them for $25 for all 4. I told him that was not really a fair price, but he just wanted to get rid of them.

Dilemma: GMC factory utilizes a 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern as far as I can find out. And Jeep uses a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern for my YJ. Since this is just for a trailer, should I just buy adapters to make the two work? Keep in mind that I can always modify my axle (pipe) to any length to accomodate since it is not yet built. Or should I re-sell the used wheels and buy the correct ones, probably some chrome, white, or black steel "wagon wheels"? If I sell them, what do you think they would be worth with the covers?

Most trailer axle studs are pretty short for alloy wheels. My guess is you would need to press new studs into the hubs to use the alloy wheels.

Re: Weekend Score, and wheel questions.

My dad already had longer studs pressed into them. He actually made 4 sets of these about 15 years ago, he used 3 of the sets, and said I could have the last set. Should be good to go, but I'll keep that in the back of my head just in case.

Re: Weekend Score, and wheel questions.

While those alloys don't look too bad , I throw in my take....

Ditch the wheels (you should be able to get your $$ back) and find a set of jeep rims...for 2 reasons:

1) You'll only need to carry one spare ...for both the Jeep & the trailer.

2) Try finding a spare 5on "oddball" rim or spare out on the trail somewhere. Jeez, I've got 5on5.5 rims and they're getting down right scarce! Most folks with older (REAL!) Jeeps have gone to larger axles (6&8 lug) or gotten soft and gone to "cushy" jeeps (YJ/TJ/XJ) with 5on4.5 rims...finally had to knuckle down and buy my own spare!

Best to use 5x4.5 so that any trailer spare can be used if you don't have one.

Re: Weekend Score, and wheel questions.

Thanks for all you input Dudes! That's the way I was leaning, to ditch them in lieu of some that will match what the YJ already has, 5x4.5. That way I only need one spare, and they can all be interchangeable.
