Sorta O/T: The \'Venerable\' Carter BBD

Looking around the web for AT kickdown info, I found this quote:
</font><blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr />
The Carter BBD is a venerable carburetor that was used [...] from the mid-sixties until the late 80s. It is a reliable and simple carb with only one real drawback : the throttle shaft bushings. [emphasis supplied]

[/ QUOTE ]
</font><blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr />
VENERABLE: Commanding respect by virtue of age, dignity, character, or position.

RELIABLE: 1. Capable of being relied on; dependable: a reliable assistant; a reliable car. 2. Yielding the same or compatible results in different clinical experiments or statistical trials.
(The American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Ed.)

[/ QUOTE ]

Can this guy be talking about the same Carter BBD than came on our 258's?!?!

Gotta raise the flag on this one.

1. Till the Feel-back carb was introduced,
2. The Carter worked quite well,
3. Like most carbs.
4. And yes, the bushings were a problem,
5. A source for a vacuum leak.
6. To quote calls forth respect through age,
7. I'd say the the definition fits.
8. But that's not to say,
9. The Feedback BBD has it's moments.
10. And still the carb seems to work...
11. It's the feedback emission stuff that failed.

I'm not going to say the Carters are wonderful and I do wish mine were replaced with fuel injection.

While I have had to clean out the idle tubes several times my CJ7 has gone 130,000 miles and the Carter has never been taken off the intake manifold, not bad for an 18 year old carb. It's never been rebuilt and seems reliable to me.

I have two Jeeps running the original Carter setup with all of the emissions junk still connected. The Scrambler needs a bit of tweeking right now, choke is sticking. They both idle fine and run OK (up to about 3,000 RPM) on the road. If I were going to ask for anything more it would be better fuel economy.

Venerable maybe, surely reliable in my opinion.

I like mine. Runs great...... and at any angle. BUT......... I have learned how to live with it and make them run good. First I eliminated the "feel bad" model with a "non" style. Learned what usually causes the problems.....fixed that and never looked back. Mine runs great.
