O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

Hey guys,

I have a 95 mazda 626 with a manual trans and a 4cyl engine. I noticed my gasmilage decreasing, and decided to do a tune up. New air/oil filters, plugs and wires. I also did a fuel injection cleaning by spraying the throttle body and putting an adative in the gas tank.

The problem I am having is it has a low rpm rough idle. Occationally wants to stall. Im not a nascar driver but while driving in between shifts it is not smooth since the tach just drops down to 1500 so fast then once the shift is complete it needs to go back to 3000.

I checked for vacuum leaks, I check for spark in each wire. At this point I have no good idea what it could be. To possibilities were the TPS (throttle position sensor), or maybe a week coil???

Any Ideas or comments would be helpful.
Thanks

Mike

Re: O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

1. Is it doing this when cold, or
2. Does it start when the engine is warmed up?
3. Have you checked the Idle Air Valve (or what ever it's called)?
4. How many miles on the O2 sensor?
5. Are there any codes stored?

Re: O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

It actually idles higher when first started and then the problems start once it warms up. I have not checked the idle air valve, it has probably 95k on the 02 sensor, and I dont know about any codes, it is a 95 so maybe.

Does this give you any better ideas as to how to approach it?

thanks

[/ QUOTE ]1. Yes, any little bit of information helps.
2. The engine should show a spike in idle at start,
3. For about 2 - 3 seconds, and
4. Then settle back to about 850 RPM (for an AT).
5. But if it stays high for a long time,
6. Like the Warm Up cycle of then engine,
7. Then drops...
8. It kind of rules out a lot of expensive stuff.
9. Try taking off the air filter and hose..
10. And choking off the air.
11. Does the RPM change?

Re: O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

I have a buddy with a 626. A few years ago his was suffering from what I think is a similiar problem. Periodically it would not start at all. He had to have a part replaced on the engine. It might have been an EGR valve. It was silver, located on the drivers side of the engine bay. He used to practice percussion persuasion it every now and then to get it to stop misbehaving. It was expensive part at the dealer - but an easy install. He get's into to work @ 3 hours from know. I show him your post and ask him if it sounds like the same issue he had.

I spoke to my buddy. Your symptons match his. He told me that one of the mechanics cleaned it out, reinstalled it, and things have been working fine. He does not know the name of the part because he is not mechnically inclined.

Re: O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

Well I really havent had much time to start trying various things. I dont think the idle at start up is abnormal. It is about 1100-1200 then after a mile of driving and the thermostat does open it is about 750-850 rpm. I think that is normal. I had tried choking it by hand to check for vacuum leaks but it just dies after words.

I havent looked on the engine for anything to be cleaned but I guess I will check that out in the next few days.

I think the whole problem is just something minor it just seems like it will be a pain to pin point the problem.

Re: O/T Mazda 626 idle problem

Just tonight I noticed a problem in the steering, when the wheel is cut hard the idle goes crazy. Is there a vacuum leak somewhere??? Any new ideas?

thanks
